One of the greatest Commodore 64 games of all time – or so I am told.
I’m not going to tell anyone they’re wrong when they start going on about the Last Ninja, but it never really clicked with me because the controls did that weird diagonal control thing and it required pixel perfect jumping, as described visually above.
But boy, the music was tops and the loading screen was amazing. Bob Stephenson really knew how to do a damn good loading screen. His stuff really opened my eyes to the possibilities of drawing digitally. And now look where we are!
Fun fact, the NES version of The Last Ninja was programmed by Zzap! 64’s Gary Liddon while he was in Australia’s own Melbourne House studio. I thought that was especially cool. God, I couldn’t imagine playing it with the NES controller, that would be infuriating.
