This is my favourite Interplay game. It had humour, it had depth, and it had what was at the time the most well animated 2D characters we’d seen in video games. The different combinations of character interactions made chess fun for everyone and it was a real treat to see the cute little touches put into every character. Plus it had Monty Python references, which was an easy way to win over a crowd of nerds.
(We didn’t really have geeks back then, we were all just nerds)
I’d love to see this on iOS, because I’m really hankering for a good chess game on the system.
I played with this mostly on the C64, but I have to give credit to the wonderful Amiga version which really used the extra resolution to make the characters come alive. There was also a 3DO version I tried but it felt…stale? Everything was realistically (for the time) rendered and it ended up sucking the life out of it all. I think they ended up doing a sequel of sorts set in the future with robots, but it just wasn’t the same.
