As I write this, it’s #c64month – the time once again to spend August playing Commodore 64 games…like I need an excuse! This time around I’ve decided to dedicate the month to finally get around to finishing Creatures, one of the last great games on the machine, and an acronym for Clyde Radcliffe Exterminates All The Ugly, Repulsive Earth-ridden Slime. Catchy!

It’s a really solid platformer that I never got to play when it first came out, thanks to the almost complete lack of C64 games distribution here in Australia in 1990, and for some reason I never finished it.

It’s super hard! Ridiculously hard! It’s the 21st of the month and I’ve only just now finished the first level! How the hell did we put up with this kind of difficulty back then? It’s not like you could save your progress either. Sheesh. Oh well, we have YouTube longplay videos now to save us all the trouble, right?

(I have so far resisted the urge to watch this)

There were 16-bit versions of this too, but they were just horrid, with jerky scrolling and too-large characters and no sense of weight to anything. Oh well!
