Cops ‘n’ Robbers was not given kind reviews when it came out. The graphics are simplistic, even for 1985 standards. There was no plot to speak of. The gameplay, which saw you wandering around a maze stealing diamonds, avoiding (or shooting) policemen and exploring underground caves that are full of ghosts, was simplistic at best. Even the C64 gamer’s bible Zzap! 64 proclaimed it to be “the worst program we’ve seen on the C64”.
It reminds me a bit of Gorf, in a way, and it has a lot of charm behind its expanded blocky visuals. I like the sense of danger and exploration, and the little touches like how your flashlight illuminates the underground mazes, or how if you get arrested or killed you see a little police car or ambulance cart you off. It’s a triumph of personality over performance.
Even if it only keeps your attention for five minutes, I think playing Cops ‘n’ Robbers will be one of the most memorable gaming experiences you have today. Try it out!
Tomorrow is “D” – featuring a similar game with terrible graphics but so much charm!
